I love Rembrandt's work. When I decided to do podcasts about him, I didn't know that this was the 400th year since his birth, and that there would be big celebrations all over the world.
As I mention in the podcasts, my birthday and Rembrandt's are the same. I wonder to what extent that relates to my affinity for his work. Another favorite painter of mine, Gustav Klimt, had his birthday one day earlier, on July 14. I'm sure I would feel that each painter's work was magnificent, regardless of their birth date, but the coincidence certainly makes it more fun.
To prepare for the podcast, I go back through my books, and browse the internet, looking for material that I think would be interesting to relate. I think I'm fairly familiar with most of the artist's I've featured in the podcasts, but I'm always surprised at how much new information I find when doing these reviews. I gain a new perspective, and there seems to be so much more to discover. I suppose I've changed, too, and the things that grab my attention now are different than what I noticed before.
What most impressed me about looking at Rembrandt's work, recently, was the keen attention to nuance and drama. It's so important, I think, to reach into the depth of the subjects we're portraying on canvas. Since reviewing Rembrandt, I can definitely say I've been re-influenced by him, and I hope my work will be better for it.
